When should dogs start joint supplements?

There is no universal age at which every dog should start a joint supplement. Some owners choose one for an adult dog as part of a broader routine; others do not use one unless a vet recommends it. The right decision depends on the individual dog and product.

Puppies and growing dogs

Growth requires carefully balanced nutrition. Use a complete food appropriate for the puppy’s expected adult size and do not add calcium, vitamins or joint supplements without veterinary advice. Hip & Joint Complete is for adult dogs only and is not suitable for puppies.

Healthy adult dogs

A healthy adult dog may not need a joint supplement. Priorities include suitable exercise, healthy body condition, good-quality complete nutrition, safe footing and routine veterinary care.

Owners may still consider a clearly labelled complementary feed for an adult dog because of lifestyle, breed, previous injury or personal preference. This is a choice, not proof that starting earlier prevents future disease.

Active and working dogs

High activity increases the importance of progressive training, warm-ups, recovery and monitoring. A supplement should not be used to justify excessive workload or to continue through pain or lameness.

Mid-life and senior dogs

Age can be a useful prompt to review weight, muscle, exercise and the home environment, but age alone does not diagnose a joint problem. Discuss a new, persistent or worsening movement change with a vet rather than assuming it is normal ageing.

Before starting any product

  • Confirm that it is intended for your dog’s life stage.
  • Check the complete daily amount for the correct weight band.
  • Review all active ingredients and warnings.
  • Check how long the pack lasts at that serving.
  • Ask your vet before use with medication, another supplement or an existing condition.

Set realistic expectations

Joint supplements are complementary feeds, not veterinary medicines. They cannot guarantee prevention or a visible result. For Hip & Joint Complete, allow approximately four to six weeks of consistent daily use before assessing any change; results vary between dogs.

The best starting point is not a particular birthday. It is an informed review of the adult dog’s health, routine, diet and the exact product being considered.
