It depends on the formula, the serving, the individual dog and anything else the dog eats or takes. “Natural” does not automatically mean suitable, and a product being intended for daily use does not remove the need to follow its label.
Check who the product is for
Start with life stage and warnings. A product for adult dogs may be unsuitable for puppies or for pregnant or nursing dogs. Some dogs need individual advice because of allergies, digestive sensitivity, an existing condition or a therapeutic diet.
Use the labelled daily serving
Serving often changes with body weight. Check whether amounts are stated per chew, tablet or scoop, and calculate what the dog receives in the complete daily serving. Do not increase the amount because results are not immediate.
Avoid accidental duplication
Two products can contain the same vitamins, minerals, fatty acids or joint ingredients. Combining them may produce a total that was not intended. Include treats, fortified foods and human supplements when discussing the diet with your vet.
- Keep a current list of all products and medicines.
- Use the supplied measure or complete unit as instructed.
- Store the product where the dog cannot reach it.
- Stop and seek advice if an unexpected reaction occurs.
Medication and health conditions
Ask your vet before starting a supplement if your dog takes medication, is under veterinary care or has a diagnosed condition. This is particularly important before surgery or when a dog has digestive, metabolic, liver, kidney, bleeding or allergy concerns.
Review rather than assume
Keep the tub and label so you can identify the exact product and batch. Review whether it remains appropriate when the dog’s weight, diet, medication or health changes. If you are using it because of a mobility concern, the underlying issue still needs veterinary assessment.
A clearly labelled complementary feed used exactly as directed may be suitable for ongoing use in many adult dogs, but there is no universal guarantee. Long-term use should remain an informed choice based on the specific product and dog.
