Collagen is not one single supplement ingredient. Its type and processing affect its structure, so a small amount of one form should not be compared directly with a much larger amount of another.
What UC-II® is
UC-II® is a branded, undenatured form of type II collagen. “Undenatured” means its three-dimensional structure has been retained during controlled processing. Type II collagen is associated with cartilage, although UC-II® is not simply used as a bulk building material.
How it differs from hydrolysed collagen
Hydrolysed collagen has been broken down into smaller peptides. It is commonly supplied in gram or larger milligram quantities as a nutritional protein ingredient. UC-II® retains a different structure and is used at smaller amounts. The figures are therefore not a like-for-like measure of strength or value.
What canine studies have examined
Published studies have evaluated the UC-II® ingredient in dogs with osteoarthritis. A 2005 paper compared undenatured type II collagen with placebo, and a 2012 paper compared it with a glucosamine-and-chondroitin treatment. The papers reported changes in study measures, but they were relatively small studies in dogs with diagnosed disease.
These are ingredient studies. They are not clinical trials of Systemavit Hip & Joint Complete, and their findings should not be presented as proof that the finished product treats osteoarthritis or will produce the same outcome in every dog.
Reading a product label
Check whether the label names UC-II® specifically, states the amount per chew and makes the complete daily serving clear. Hip & Joint Complete provides 20 mg UC-II® per chew: 20 mg daily for dogs under 25 kg and 40 mg daily for dogs weighing 25 kg or more.
Keep the role of a supplement in perspective
UC-II® is used as a complementary feed ingredient. A supplement is not a substitute for veterinary assessment, weight management, suitable exercise or prescribed treatment. Ask your vet before use with medication or another supplement, and seek prompt advice for pain, lameness or a sudden change in movement.
