Glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM often appear together on dog joint-supplement labels, but they are not the same ingredient and their milligram amounts should not be combined into one headline figure.
Glucosamine
Glucosamine is an amino sugar found naturally in the body. Supplements commonly use forms such as glucosamine hydrochloride or glucosamine sulphate. The form matters when comparing labels, because different salts are not identical by weight.
Chondroitin
Chondroitin sulphate is a component of cartilage and is used as a nutritional ingredient in joint products. It is distinct from glucosamine even when both appear in the same formula.
MSM
MSM is short for methylsulfonylmethane. It is an organosulphur compound used in a range of human and animal supplements. Its milligram amount describes MSM, not sulphur alone.
Why products combine them
Manufacturers may include the three ingredients to create a multi-ingredient formula, but that does not prove that every combination or ratio has the same effect. Evidence about an individual ingredient cannot automatically be transferred to every finished product containing it.
How to compare labels accurately
- Check the exact ingredient form.
- Find the amount in the complete daily serving, not only per chew or scoop.
- Check how the serving changes with body weight.
- Do not treat a larger total blend weight as proof of superiority.
- Look for all vitamins, minerals and other actives to avoid duplication.
Amounts in Hip & Joint Complete
Each chew contains 250 mg glucosamine hydrochloride, 50 mg chondroitin sulphate and 100 mg MSM. Dogs under 25 kg receive one chew daily. Dogs weighing 25 kg or more receive two chews, providing daily totals of 500 mg, 100 mg and 200 mg respectively.
